CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR ISSUE 9

EZTETYKA

During the 1960s and 1970s, along with the decolonization processes in the Third World, several filmmakers in Latin America articulated their cinematic thoughts in manifestos which connected creation and politics: Cine y subdesarrollo (Fernando Birri, 1962), Eztetyka da fome (Glauber Rocha, 1965), Hacia un tercer cine (Octavio Getino and Fernando Solanas, 1969), Por un cine imperfecto (Julio García Espinosa, 1969), Eztetyka do sonho (Glauber Rocha, 1971) and Teoría y práctica de un cine junto al pueblo (Jorge Sanjinés and Grupo Ukamau, 1979) are some of the most significant theoretical texts.

In its 9th issue, Cinema Comparat/ive Cinema wants to approach these texts regarding contemporary cinema and to think about their validity nowadays. Some ideas from these manifestos, like the national identity faced with neo-colonial homogenization, the need for the testimony of reality, the collective creation methods, the questioning of the artist status, the creative use of the production limitations or the emancipation from bourgeois ideology, can be re-thought due to contemporary phenomena: the evolution of cinema in the countries where these manifestos were born, the popularization of documentary film, the new creation processes with domestic cameras or mobile phones, the diffusion in social networks, the relevance of these alternative channels in the recent social movements in Latin America, the Arab countries and Europe, the rising pedagogical projects to teach cinema… Through these topics, we want to think whether these manifestos are useful to approach current political cinema.
